Vision Marshall - Shaping Our Future

About

In early 2008, at the direction of its governing board, the Marshall County Economic Development Council established the Vision Marshall strategic planning effort.   Twenty five individuals throughout the County who represent a comprehensive sampling of the industry and civic leaders were invited to sit on the steering committee.  The group then identified members willing to serve on the executive committee and appointed Mr. Gary Gore and Dr. Robert Exley as co-chairs for the effort.

Input for the effort was solicited from community members via a web-based survey tool.  After identifying 800+ names of individuals involved in community development related committees, boards and the Marshall County Leadership Challenge, information and invitations were sent requesting these individuals to become involved in the Vision Marshall process.   In July 2008, 175 business, community and civic leaders from throughout Marshall County attended a major community awareness event in mid-July featuring Mr. Neal Wade, Director of the Alabama Development Office,  Dr. Matthew  Hughes, Alabama Community College System Director of Workforce Development, and Mr. Bradley Byrne, Chancellor of the Alabama Community College System.

Next, a comprehensive community visioning process was conducted mid-fall 2008 where 235 community members participated in a structured event to collect direct input regarding goals and objectives.  The participants were divided into small groups of no more than ten and completed a roundtable discussion regarding their perception of and vision for Marshall County.  They provided feedback in three broad areas:  perceived strengths of the county, obstacles to achieving our vision and key action items to undertake.  The steering committee received a total of 564 responses with 73 being action items, 220 being obstacles and 271 being strengths.  Analysis of this information revealed several common themes from which the following Vision Statement and goals and objectives were crafted.
